    Great stuff. tempo is SO super important for your golf swing. One thing that has also helped me is paying attention to gravity... like doing a backswing and just feeling the club drop back down at the speed of gravity. Letting gravity dictate the speed of the downswing at first and then gently accelerating from there seems to work nicely for me.

    Set up is critical to good shot making. A golf swing cannot be consciously controlled. It happens too fast. Therefore, correct set up is essential. A 3 minute golf lesson is perfect. Too many swing thoughts set up a shot to fail. Good set up + good tempo = good shot.

      @Gilesgillgolf I'm glad I ran across your videos. Golf is a remarkable game imho. We challenge ourselves to think and act in new ways. We learn to choose our clubs, shape our shots, and accept our successes and failures with equal humility. I have long felt that if the world of humankind operated like a game of golf we would all be living in the kingdom of heaven as Christ described and demonstrated so aptly so that we can know "the truth, the life, and the way." Sadly, mankind has yet to break 80. But, today is a good day to try again. ❤

  • @johnatchley9754
    @johnatchley9754 День тому

    The pause at the top is critical to prevent rushing the downswing and allowing you to let your weight shift on to the left or lead leg. It allows the momentum of the heavy chunk of metal (the club head) going back to come to a stop and change to momentum in the opposite direction in the downswing. If you want the use names to help set this rhythm, two good ones are Vijay Singh (stretch out the first name as in Vee Jaaaay and make the last one short and a bit explosive) and Ernie Els.

    “Light thumbs” works for me. When I’m warming up in the nets, I will even ‘grip’ (if that’s the right word) the club in the gap between forefinger and the next finger of my right (trail) hand. That really does make it impossible to grip it tight and allows a really free, relaxed swing.

  • @Garysalunatic
    @Garysalunatic День тому

    I switched to a 2 hand grip instead of interlocking many years ago. I felt there was more flexibility for me to hinge. I also took my trailing hand thumb off the grip to grip a bit more like a baseball bat with my bottom(trailing) hand. That also gave more flexibility but more importantly it took away the tendency to cast the club and helped to allow centrifugal force to be the speed generator in my swing. I don’t swing any faster but I definitely don’t have to work so hard for the speed either

    Excellent Giles. Center contact to me is the most important one you went over. Without that bad things happen. I spray a “powdered” foot spray on the face of the club I’m hitting. I get instant feedback that shows where the ball made contact. After a few shots, I wipe off and reapply. I have worn spots on my clubs in the center of the face. Hope this helps some of you golfers out there trying to accomplish center contact….

    I find that if I hit casual like I’m doing a pitch shot then the way the ball behaves because of my easy relaxed swing is so much better

      @Gilesgillgolf 2 дні тому

      That’s a great way of getting that slower smoother tempo

  • @systemoptimizer3542
    @systemoptimizer3542 2 дні тому

    I like to walk and move quickly when going somewhere (like you and Rory). Both a 1-2-3 swing tempo (like Ernie Els and Fred Couples) and a 1-2 tempo (like Nick Price, or Rory with his early transition) have worked for me. I think when my arms and chest are more synchronized in their pace and stopping position for top of swing is when I get better shots. Conversely, if my arms abduct across my chest and arm swing gets long (making upper body be ahead of arms coming down, arms never being capable of catching up the swing is more of a struggle, feels like it takes more effort, and produces slower speeds. It gives the illusion of a slower tempo overall, but is really more of an out of sequence making the swing take longer).

    Thanks for this video, Giles. I'm getting back into golf after 5-year layoff. I couldn't play due to lower back issues. I've lost considerable distance since trying to play again, which is causing me to swing too hard and rush the downswing. I can't get it through to my brain to swing smooth. I will try the drills you recommend and hopefully start eliminating the fat and thin shots I've been experiencing lately. When I do swing smooth, I generally make solid contact. Thanks again!!

    Great video but what about weight shift for striking the ball when on the ground ( irons, woods, hybrids). This method looks great when ball is on a tee. When low point is ahead of the ball surely one needs to start the initial move with a slight bump to the left THEN think about rotation ? I really need to work this sequence out as my fault is falling forward.

    Even with some serious tendonitis in both wrists, your drills really helped me stopped the shanking and left pull shots with my wedges. One of the worst things about shanking is the negative thought that you will shank. I practice in my backyard with the almost golf ball and hit 80 to 120 foot shots. The almost golf ball goes 1/3 the distance of a real ball but a wonderful training shot ball. Thanks again Giles and that head cover under the arm pit during the swing is a super tip.☺Sincerely, Bill M., Uncasville, CT

    What about pushing up and back with the left or lead leg to generate hip turn and speed? Realize it can be difficult for older players like me (turn 83 today) but still seems to make sense to try without falling into the error of jumping violently. I think you may have recommended it yourself in another video. Also its important not to let the left arm collapse and bend on the backswing, which brings the hands and grip in closer to the ears, throws everything out of sequence, creates a weak slappy, wristy swing that will send the ball left into the woods every time.
